“Six Months” Is a Default, Not a Universal Rule for Every Data View

A report assumes every system view has identical retention and either misses available data or plans on data that is not there.

Evidence tier describes my hands-on relationship with the content. Official sources describe platform contracts/documentation. Production observations should not automatically be treated as official limits.

Why it bites

Salesforce describes many Data Views as up to six months, but explicitly documents exceptions such as _SMSMessageTracking retaining data indefinitely and reconciliation data with a much shorter window.

What to check
  1. Open the specific Data View documentation.
  2. Record retention/timezone per view instead of inheriting a global default.
Make it cheaper next time
  1. Keep retention metadata in the Data Views Atlas.
  2. Persist long-term history you actually need.
